admitedlly it’s not all work. i do often spent the first hour when i get home eating mouthfuls of left over food between games of battlefield. god damn this game rules. i’m able to relax and shoot either japanese/americans depending on spawn and prove my domination as i sniper.

bookworm adventures 2

i recently installed bookworm adventures 2 and i can’t put it down. it’s a really fun, hard game with the usual popcap humour (they also made plants vs. zombies).

in an effort to save money i took a load of old games into lamestation to get some store credit and find something to occupy the overcast hours. i should obviously be doing school work, but that’ll happen eventually. still feels like i’ve just moved, plus the school stuff is still all in boxes. excuses etc.

light 'em up

i’ve spent most of the weekend playing the arma 2 demo. the demo itself is massive and i have to say this is one of the best i’ve ever played. i’ve always been a war sim fan, but this is a new level of excellence. for some reason none of the shops around chichester have a) heard of it or b) can tell me when it’s coming out (even though it is). so i had to order it from amazon, damn the wait.

rps has a great review and also links to this. dslyecxi is hardcore. reading his tactics guide reminds me of all those army manuals i used to read from globalsecurity when i wrote a bit for defensetech. it should give you an idea how seriously these guys take it (although not all the time), and i can’t wait to get an internet connection that works to join a fire team.

unfortunately i’ve had all of 10mins connection and i’m disconnected as i write. it was connected when i started so that should give you an idea of how much my internet is pissing me off this weekend. its worse than ever this month and i won’t be able to download my 15gb allocation because i can’t fucking connect.

a nice long weekend, what better way to spend it than starting a new campaign on etw. i’m playing prussia, one of the hardest starts and i found myself yesterday getting angry and then sulking for about half an hour. i made moves to take over my first region, belonging to sweden, and had just beaten back an army into its city. it was an end of turn so i couldn’t then attack again until the other countries had their go. so what does courland do in its turn? with my army at the fucking gates, they take the city. that pissed me off, then i realised that courland is a protectorate of russia (ie a massive fucking force) against my two region loser state.

i’m about twenty years in and have started expanding in europe but have so many enemies i’m fighting on at least four fronts. denmark can fuck off, as can poland-lithuania. i’m worried about the forged alliance with austria and have just made an example of france. i’m thinking of taking britain but not before i grow some armies, other than the existing ones at each city because i think its all going to go mental soon.

i haven’t even started the other theatres yet. i love this shit.

i’m reminded of when i used to live in the hornet with iamthedemonamon and was playing rome total war. i had the giant map pinned to the wall, bluetack to represent my armies and spent my afternoons at work printing out maps of europe and making strategy for the evenings games. if i’d only got one of those centurion hats.

godfather two, hitman, company of heroes

i got a call from iamthedemonamon the other afternoon and he asked what i was up to, my reply was something like “sitting in my boxer shorts playing godfather”.

it was one of those beautiful spring afternoons, the kind we rarely get, and my first instinct is to close the curtains and play videogames. its a guilty pleasure but something i’ve done since i owned my first pc. today is overcast, and i’ve played a few games but the feeling isn’t the same – i’m not robbing myself of something.

i can’t wait to look back on these salad days.

godfather isn’t even that good. the first few hours are okay, but it gets tedious. i think i finished it in ten.

the latest company of heroes expansion (everyone loves killing nazis) is pretty much the same as the last two games, didn’t really play much of that.

but hitman will always have a place in my heart.

the easter holidays have come and gone, but the memories will last until monday.

damn the whole subcontinent .

i bought etw as a reward for surviving another week of teaching and have played my first full game this weekend. i’m only a few turns in (playing as the brits) and have just taken mysore with too small an army. i’m now spending every turn fighting off skirmishers that are stopping production in my gold and gem mines causing me to lose money. so i have to send in the line infantry, crush the rebellion and try and rebuild before the next round of attacks. meanwhile, without the funds to spend in the americas those bastard hurons are picking away at florida and georgia. i haven’t even started developing london yet.

i can sort of imagine a group of old timers sitting around in 1714 wondering what to do about those blasted maharatta’s and i’m reminded of eddie izzard:

“cause we had it, the british empire, and we lost it by going “oh, do you think so?” and, umm…a lot. and “oh, really? have they?” there was a lot of that towards the end of the empire. “are you sure?”
